Tofu is freeware that will take text and put it into columns that are much easier to read.

I always enjoyed reading the Straight Dope Archives, but stopped because they were much too wide on my computer screen. Resizing the window each time was a pain. Now, I just copy the text and put it into Tofu to be arranged in columns. It is easier to read that way.

If you use tabbed browsing in Safari, you will certainly want to install this freeware. Taboo gives you a warning before you close or quit a Safari window with opened tabs. I have had multiple tabs opened before and instead of hitting Command-W for close window, I hit Command-Q to Quit Safari and lose all my precious tabs.

That was before Taboo. Now I get a warning to the tune of “Are you sure you want to do this?”

HandBrake is a great freeware application that will let you rip your DVD’s to your computer and compress them to smaller files. (Including H.264). This is good for a few reasons.

• play the movie on the road without having to spin the DVD (This saves battery)
• put all of your movies in a Mac Mini and connect it to your TV to be watched at anytime
• international DVD’s can be ripped and played in any region

Jewelcase is a very neat plugin for iTunes. It installs a visualizer that show the album cover and gives information as the song is playing. It’s hard to explain, visit the site for a visual.

Obviously this is most beneficial when your collection is labeled correctly and has album covers. For correct labels in bulk, try iEatBrainz. If you are looking for a good program to add album covers, I use Utilitunes. (not free, but cheap)

Update: It looks like this app has gone the way of the almighty dollar.

Quicksilver is a very powerful freeware that just gets better and better. They market as “an evolving framework for accessing and manipulating many forms of personal data”, but it is even more then that.

There is a bit of a learning curve to Quicksilver, but there is help out there.

X-Charge is freeware for monitoring the performance of your battery. It also “resuscitates the cool looking dock icon that displayed the current charge of the battery in MacOS X 10.0, which unfortunately was removed from further versions of the OS.”

I mentioned VLC and how useful it is when watching video. I enjoy watching the video in fullscreen, but didn’t like having the controls over the show. To avoid this, I use the VLC Widget. While watching the video, activate dashboard to stop, pause, go forward, backward, and adjust the volume.

I did notice a slight delay on some of the actions, but overall it is very useful to have.

Growl is a very robust notification system for your Mac. It works with a ton of applications. Of course, notifications are good for you to keep up with what your system is doing without having to switch between applications.

It is impossible to review all the features of Growl. Perhaps some readers can report how they use it and if they like it.
