FreeDMG offers a fast and simple way to create disk images by dragging and dropping. You can drop files on either this app’s window or dock icon, and it’s much faster than using the Disk Utility application. FreeDMG also offers several options for the disk image. You can create internet enabled disk images and choose the level of compression, encryption, and type.
I found this program quite useful for backing up my Mac. When you have conflicting formats on the backup hard drive, you can create a quick disk image to be copied over.

One of my favorite features of Mac OS is how easy it is to grab screenshots. With Command-Shift-3 you can grab a picture of the whole desktop and with Command-Shift-4 you can select parts of the screen. Each version of the Mac OS has a default file type for the captured image — Pict before OS X, PDF for 10.0 to 10.3, and PNG for 10.4.
With savescreenie, you can choose which kind of file type to use for screen captures. You can choose any of the common file types, and you can always revert back to the default file type.

Picture It Postage lets you create your own US Mail stamps for mailing letters and postcards. When you start up the program, it loads the images from your iPhoto library. You can select any photo, crop it how you like, add text, add effects, and choose the stamp value. After getting it just right, you purchase the stamps and they are sent to you in the mail.
There are some rules about what you can put on the stamps, but it is explained the first time you open the application. Endicia, the maker of Picture It Postage, is an approved licensed vendor for the USPS.
When I saw this application, I thought it would be a great idea for gifts. Send grandma a book of stamps with her grandchildren on them. Or order some to put on the Christmas cards that you send out so you can make yourself look even more “on top of things”.

UNO will be good news to a lot of Mac users. It “brings the sunken unified toolbar / titlebar look and feel to every single window on your system.” If you are tired of the brushed metal (think Safari) and would just like a unified look for everything, UNO is the answer and it’s simple to install.
You can always uninstall UNO to revert your Mac back to its original look. Both the install and the uninstall work well. I really like the look it brings to Mac OS X.

Of all the freeware I use, this bundle of Automator actions probably saves me the most time. Using these actions with Automator will give you access to many of the most used features in Photoshop. The list is too long to include here, but the developer gives a very detailed list.
There are bundles for Photoshop CS and CS2 and he is always adding more actions. (Each action has a button that automatically checks for updates.)
While Automator can never really use all the great power in photoshop, these actions can certainly get rid of the tedious tasks so you can have more time to be creative.

Solitaire XL is a very well done version of the classic one player card game. The developer did a great job with the application using Cocoa and OpenGL with this freeware. The effects are great.
Solitaire, the most used application on a Windows system, done better on the Mac.

iZoom offers a fast and easy way to crop your photos. It works great for making photos smaller for emailing, posting to a blog or making avators for online forums.
iZoom offers a nice interface with a few different options to choose from.

iMailist sends HTML emails, perfect for sending out a family newsletter or an announcement from your small business. You’ll need to prepare your HTML newsletter ahead of time in Dreamweaver, GoLive, or some other HTML editor. Then import the HTML into iMailist, make any tweaks and fill in your recipients, and then hit send. Instant newsletter. (But FMW discourages spamming.)

I love using iPhoto, but it’s weak for exporting photos to a website. The built-in “export” feature works, but it doesn’t offer much customizability. Galerie, on the other hand, gives you several options to choose from:
- The ability for your viewers to leave comments
- The ability to include movies and music in the gallery page
- A visitore count
- Great looking templates
If you regularly post your pictures for others to see, this is a must have.

FinderScape shows you the power of your Mac — it let’s you explore your files in 3D. As you “travel” around your hard drive, you can preview songs, movies, and pictures in your “hard drive world”.
Besides being fun to use, FinderScape also makes for an impressive presentation. I changed the theme to “Blue” and liked the look of that quite a bit. Nice and powerful program.
Update: This program seems to have disappeared. Bummer.
