StopDashboard Widget

The StopDashboard Widget is a widget that ironically stops Dashboard. When you need every last ounce of computing power, you can click this widget and Dashboard will no longer be running. However, the nice thing is that you can simply press F12 to start up Dashboard again. (It doesn’t kill the Dashboard, just stops it.)

Personally, I really love Dashboard and have a few very useful widgets on there. But when I am using Photoshop or encoding a home video for DVD I use this widget for a little extra oomph.

With Mac OS X Tiger, birthdays put into Address Book can be automatically added into a birthday calendar in iCal. This script allows for the other custom dates in Address Book to be put into iCal on a calendar of your choosing. Once installed, you can click the date and choose which calendar to add it to. By default, there is also an alarm added to the event. (You can take out the alarm by altering the script.)

He also offers a script to add birthdays for those who are using Panther or those who just want to have more control over their birthday calendar.

Aspect Ratio Calculator does one thing and does it well — it allows digital video content creators to calculate the correct dimensions for their videos. For example, if you need to scale down a video for web publishing but want to maintain its 4:3 aspect radio, type one dimension into the Aspect Ratio Calculator and it returns the other dimension. Also works with 16:9 aspect ratio.

With the release of the new iPod that plays video, iPod owners are looking for ways to convert their existing videos to be compatible with their iPods. This is easy to do with Quicktime Pro, although it is a bit slow and costs money. MovieToGo offers a free–and fast– way to convert video files. The program works well and is very easy to use. You simply open the video file with the program and click the “Convert to iPod video” button.

The basic rule is that if Quicktime can play the video (with or without codecs), then it can be converted with this freeware.

Web designers and programmers will find SimpleCSS to be quite helpful. SimpleCSS makes writing CSS code a breeze.

In the left column you specify the elements, classes, and ids for which you want to create styles. On the right you use simple controls to create the styles — for example, you can choose fonts from a drop down menu, choose colors from the color wheel, and specify borders, alignment, visibility, etc. At the bottom you see an instant preview. When you’re done, click “Export” to save your clean, fresh CSS code to a file. Couldn’t be easier. Also a great tool for learning CSS since you can preview the code and the resulting markup.

Read thru the preferences to make any changes.

Often times when an app crashes or won’t open, throwing away its preference file will correct the problem.

Also, expert users may want to edit an app’s preference file to tweak a setting or activate a hidden feature. For example, Safari has a hidden Debug menu that can be activated by editing its preference file and changing “IncludeDebugMenu” from 0 to 1. You then get an option for importing IE or Netscape bookmarks, a Javascript Console, and more. (Make sure Safari is closed when you edit its preference file.)

You could always delete preference files from home/Library/Preferences, or edit them with Property List Editor from the Developer Tools, but Pref Setter makes it so much easier. Pref Setter shows you all your preference files, which you can then search, delete, or edit. I occasionally have to delete or edit a preference file and I found those tasks to be much easier with Pref Setter.

TNEF’s Enough

Here’s another one for readers who have to live in a Windows world. (You may also like DoubleCommand, WinShortcutter, Remote Desktop, and Konfabulator.)

Sometimes when Windows users send you an email attachment, instead of finding the PDF document or Excel spreadsheet, you may find you’ve received a file called “winmail.dat”. This means the file you intended to receive was encoded in TNEF format — Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format — an ironic name for a proprietary Microsoft technology that makes it a hassle to receive attachments from some Window users.

Josh Jacob’s app TNEF’s Enough takes away the hassle. If you ever receive a “winmail.dat” file from a Windows user, use this app to decode it and get the file you expected.

Instiki is a great open source project that will let you install a wiki right on your Mac. It has an incredibly easy install for Mac OS X, but is very powerful.

From the Developers site:
-Regular expression search: Find deep stuff really fast
-Revisions: Follow the changes on every page from birth. Rollback to an earlier rev
-Export to HTML in a zip: Take the entire wiki home with you, or keep the current state for reference
-RSS feeds to track recently revised pages
-Multiple webs: Create separate wikis with their own namespaces
-Password-protected webs: Keep it private
-Authors: Each revision is associated with an author, so you can see who changed what
-Reference tracker: Which other pages are pointing to the current page?
-Speed: Using Madeleine for persistence (all pages are in memory)

VoodooPad Lite

Wikipedia.org and dozens of other web sites are built on “wiki” software — software that makes it easy for anyone to create or edit web pages. VoodooPad Lite brings the concept of wikis to your desktop, making it easy to create a bunch of hyperlinked notes or thoughts.

For example, use VoodooPad Lite to take notes in class, write down your random thoughts, or keep a journal. If your professor refers to a past lecture, you can create a hyperlink to that page in your notes to help you remember it when you study. You can also create hyperlinks to real web pages.

A very interesting, new way to take notes!
