ShareIPod

ShareIPod allows you to play the music from your iPod. This comes in handy when your music collection grows large and begins to take up too much room on your hard drive. The obvious danger of this is that if you lose your iPod, there goes your music too. (Unless, of course, your iPod syncs with a different computer and you just want to be able to use that music on your laptop while on the go.)

The developer states, “Someone gave me the hint that you can listen to the songs on your iPod by not syncing automatically, which I didn’t know. You can still use ShareIPod to share an iPod in a network, or if you don’t want to disable automatic syncing.”

Free Focused Scroll is a sort of integration of Sidetrack (shareware) and iScroll2. With this program, you’ll be able to add two finger scrolling AND hotspots to the corners of the Powerbook and iBook trackpads. That is a lot of functionality added to those Powerbooks and iBooks that are pre-2005.

(I have not been able to test this trackpad driver because I just got my new Powerbook a few weeks ago. But I did learn one thing because of this. The driver has a built in protection that will not allow it to be installed on incompatible Macs. Also, for those who do install it and don’t like it, the uninstaller in straight forward.)

Happy Thanksgiving

It is Thanksgiving weekend here in America so the FreeMacWare.com team is going to take the weekend off. This doesn’t mean you have to go without great freeware though. There are plenty of great apps in the archives that may have slipped under the radar. Following are a few of the most popular apps we have posted about:

When you’re done with those, be sure to enable tabbed browsing and have a freeware feast in the FreeMacWare.com Archives.

Baywatch

Ebay.com is one of the ten most popular sites on the web so I’m guessing that I am not the only Mac owner that uses it. If you make it a practice to follow auctions as a buyer or seller, you’ll really like Baywatch.

Baywatch will allow you to take an auction and automatically enter the end date straight into iCal. It will also let you set an alarm (sound, email, etc.) to warn you when the end of an auction is getting near. It is simple to use, just load the auction in your browser and then hit the “Refresh” button in Baywatch. The information will all be put in automatically. Then, select “Yes” and the event will be put into iCal.

As you would expect, this saves you time from having to sign in to “My Ebay” to watch the auctions. To make it even more convenient, load the iCal Events Widget and take a look at all the upcoming events easily.

ourTunes is a java app that will allow you to search iTunes libraries that are being shared on your network AND download songs from those libraries. No doubt this is a favorite app of those living in college dorms and libraries. But with the iPod becoming more and more popular, iTunes is also more common. Have ourTunes ready when the situation presents itself.

For the most part, Mac OS X does a good job at opening files and extensions in the proper applications. That is usually one of my biggest selling points to those considering the Mac. Just double click a file and the OS will take caer of the rest.

However, if you would like to make some changes, there is only so much you can do in the “Get Info” window of Finder. RCDefaultApp is a “preference pane that allows a user to set the default application used for various URL schemes, file extensions, file types, and MIME types.”

LargeType turns your display into a billboard. With LargeType installed, select a snippet of text, then choose LargeType from the Services menu. The text is then displayed in a huge translucent font across the screen.

One for the UNIX users: with PathSnagger installed, you can get the Unix path of any file in the Finder. For example, if I right click Letter to Grandma.doc in my Documents folder and choose “Snag Path UNIX”, the path “/Users/richard/Documents/Letter\ to\ Grandma.doc is copied to the clipboard.

I’ve always enjoyed Yahtzee…but I’ve never enjoyed doing the math on the dice. That is why I love SimpleYahtzee. You choose what to hold and what to roll, and you can mouse over each of the entries to see what the score would be. The graphics could use a little updating from OS 9, but the game works well and it has the great “rolling dice” sound when you push roll.

I scored 218 my first try…any challengers?

D-Vision is a powerful tool to work with video and audio from DVD’s. I have recently been using this to put OGM files on a video ipod, but there other useful tasks that can be done with it.

Including the ability to:

  • encode DVD movies in Divx, Xvid or h264.
  • extract sound of a DVD in MP3 or AC3
  • encode AVI and MPG files in Divx, Xvid or h264
  • cut AVI files
  • merge AVI or VOB files
  • encode audio file in MP3 or AC3
  • demux OGM files
