Freeware apps for learning

If you're new to Freemacware.com and like what you see, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed or signup for our emails at the right. We'll send you one Mac freeware application every day. Thanks for visiting!

There are several Mac freeware apps that will help you learn something new. From languages to music theory to typing to astronomy, there is something for everyone:

Use these to become a genius! (You’re already half way there by owning a Mac.)

SiteOrbiter

SiteOrbiter is a great tool to see the cartography of any site. You put in a URL and let SiteOrbiter build a diagram of how all the pages link to one another. Then, you can maneuver thru a site by clicking on the different dots in the diagram.

If you are a developer or site webmaster, this tool will be especially useful to you. With it you can quickly find broken links on your site, export a comma delimited spreadsheet of the site characteristics, generate site maps in XML or HTML, and quite a few other fun things.

This freeware can also help you to see just how well your site is put together for Google. I imagine that the Google army bots search out a web site and smile on the ones that are abundantly linked and intertwined. So, when you run SiteOrbiter, you’ll hope that your site looks like spaghetti after it is cooked as opposed to when it is still lined up in the package.

(You can run his on other sites as well. You don’t have to be an administrator. It’s a very good way to find hidden pages on sites. Fun.)

Handbrake Lite

Handbrake Lite is an iPod video conversion freeware application.  Since so many of my friends and family got a new iPod for Christmas, I am getting a lot of calls and e-mails asking about how they can get their videos ready for their iPod. We have featured a few great programs to convert your existing video files. (ReelBean, iSquint, MovieToGo) but these new iPod folks also want to convert their DVD’s.

Up until this point, I have been pointing them to Handbrake, but from now on I’ll point them to Handbrake Lite. This new freeware is a variation of the first one with all the extra stuff taken out. It is just two clicks to get the video from the DVD to an iPod ready format.

ReelBean is a nice media player that makes it easy to export to different formats. It has a nice interface and is written completely in Cocoa.

Export to the iPod, cell phones, and and many other formats.

This program is free until January 10th at which point it will be shareware so grab it while it’s free.

Update: This application has now gone the way of the almighty dollar.

Freeware for New Mac Owners

If you're new to Freemacware.com and like what you see, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed or signup for our emails at the right. We'll send you one Mac freeware application every day. Thanks for visiting!

FreeMacWare.com hopes that everyone enjoys their holiday season. If you have a friend or loved one who is receiving their first Mac for Christmas, be sure that they know of the abundance of great freeware for the Mac. Here is a list of good freeware for first time Mac owners. (Be sure to enable tabbed browsing before you start clicking, so they can see how that great feature works.)

Once again, have a great Christmas season. We hope to see a ton of new visitors that are exploring their Macs for the first time.

Tunatic

Ever had that song you like but you don’t know the name of it? Tunatic can probably help you identify it. With this freeware, you can play the song into your Mac’s microphone. The Mac will then try to get the defining sounds from the song and compare it to the online database, hopefully bringing you back the title and artisit of the song.

There is a lot of potential in this program. It would be great to have a phone version of the app that you can use while driving around. That way if you hear a good song on the radio, you can play it into your phone and the title and artist can be texted to your phone or emailed to your home computer.

Tunatic is a good start on this.

Here’s a brand new app that solves a long time problem: the cluttered Services menu. As you know, under every app’s main menu there are “Services” — tasks that can be performed by other apps — but that menu fills up so quickly that it becomes a bother to wade through it. Service Scrubber lets you disable any services you don’t use. I was really glad to find this. This was created by Peter Maurer on a suggestion from Rob Griffiths.

If you enjoy some of the fun flash games that are available online, you’ll probably be interested in iSwiff. iSwiff is for playing .swf files locally. By default, your Mac probably uses Quicktime in your browser. But if you copy the .swf files from the web, you can use iSwiff to play the games full screen.

They also give you some tips on finding and saving the online flash games.

Of course, iSwiff can also be used for non-games. Flash is often used for movies, presentations, and determining how fast you can type the alphabet.

I’ve always enjoyed the minesweeper game that comes on PC’s. Here is a version for the Mac…but better looking of course. There are a few options like the look of the board game, the soundtrack and it gives a way to save the games. But mostly it is just the game that we know and love.

If you have ever wanted to personalize your Mac, Tweak Freak will probably allow you to do it. It gives you options with the dock, more with Unix, changes with Finder. (The freeware will allow you to add a “Quit Finder” to the Finder Menus…allowing you to squeeze out the last bit of CPU when you are rendering movies and need every last drop.)

Take a look on the site for more examples, then launch the program to triple the list. (You’ll find Tweak Freak at the bottom of the list.) There is a lot of power, and very simple to use all of it.
