I get along fine with iChat, but many people would probably like a bit more powerful chat application. Proteus is one of several feature-rich chat applications for Mac OS X, and it was just made free this past week. It supports chatting over Yahoo, MSN, Jabber, or AOL, as well as many more features and a slick interface.

If you want to be on top of the latest news in technology, digg.com is a good place to start. “With digg, users submit stories for review, but rather than allow an editor to decide which stories go on the homepage, the users do.” For instance, right now there is a story from FreeMacBlog.com. If people think this story is interesting, then they will “digg” it. Once the story has enough diggs, then it is moved to the homepage and thousands of people will see it instantly.

Now that you’re familiar with digg.com, DiggUpdate will be more useful. DiggUpdate is a menu bar addon that lists the most recent top stories from digg’s homepage. Anytime you are bored, you can read the latest tech news as determined by other users just like you. You can choose how many stories are listed in your drop down menu.

GL Image Browser

We have posted about several great freeware products available for Mac Photographers, and GL Image Browser belongs very high on the list.

GL Image Browser is a very fast way to look through a folder of images…even thousands of images. If you left-click on a picture, you enter the full-view mode where your whole display is used to display the pictures. You can then use the arrow keys on your keyboard to go a picture forward or backward. Click again and you are back in the thumbnail viewer. Right-click a thumbnail to see the file on your harddisk.

This is not to be an iPhoto competitor. I use it as one of the first steps in my workflow. You see, I’m not a great photographer. Oftentimes, I’ll take several hundred photos and end up keeping about half of them. I like to take all the photos off the camera to a folder and then go through them with GL Image Browser. I delete the ones I know I don’t like, and import the remaining ones into iPhoto. This way, the bad photos don’t ever make it into iPhoto. This helps me keep iPhoto clean.

While iMovie is obviously the most popular video editing software for the Mac, it is always fun to see what else is out there. ZS4 is really quite amazing for a free product. Having been available for Windows for a while, it is now available for OS X.

It “is video editing and compositing software which aims to provide media experts with a facility to combine a variety of media types (currently photos, videos and audio files) into one (or more) output file(s).” There are some powerful options in this program that you don’t get in iMovie.

Notice: Upgrade to WordPress 2.0

If you're new to Freemacware.com and like what you see, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed or signup for our emails at the right. We'll send you one Mac freeware application every day. Thanks for visiting!

We took advantage of the U.S. holiday to upgrade FreeMacWare.com to WordPress 2.0. We apologize for any outage you might have experienced during the transition — it should have been 10 minutes at the most.

WP2 has built-in caching so we’re hoping it will improve FreeMacWare’s performance. We’ve noticed occasional “high CPU usage” error messages from our hosting company, so you probably have too. If WP2 doesn’t fix this, we’ll move to a better hosting situation so as to not put a damper on your experience here.

Please let us know if you see anything we missed or notice any “high usage” errors. If nothing else works, the contact form does! Or you can email us at email(AT)freemacware.com.

SizzlingKeys

I’ve wanted this for a long time but didn’t find it until now. SizzlingKeys provides global keyboard shortcuts for controlling iTunes. For example, if iTunes is playing in the background, I can press Command-Option-Right Arrow to skip to the next song, even if I’m working in Safari. SizzlingKeys supports Play, Stop, Next song, Previous song, and increasing or decreasing the iTunes volume (not the system volume), as well as several other commands. The Play shortcut will even open iTunes if it’s not already open. Gold medal to SizzlingKeys!

Oolite is a space sim game, written for Mac OS X in Objective C using Cocoa and OpenGL.

It was written as a response to the withdrawal of Elite - The New Kind from the internet. Although inspired by the work of Christian Pinder, following David Braben and Ian Bell, the work is an independent interpretation and expansion of the original game.

Oolite is designed as a small game that is easy for users to pick up and expand upon. Almost every aspect of the game can be modified using simple, free graphics packages and text-editors.

With the recent release of Camino 1.0, in addition to Firefox and Safari, it would seem we don’t need another browser. But this one is worth a look. Shiira is an open source browser built on the same rendering engine (WebKit) as Safari, so web pages look the same in Shiira as in Safari. But Shiira was built to be a more featureful version of Safari, and it succeeds. There are options such as opening the downloads window in a side drawer, changing the User Agent, sound effects, and using Safari or Firefox bookmarks. It’s 100% Cocoa, and it’s very fast. Definitely worth a try!
