Chax solves a problem that I and many others have dealt with for a long time — having to hit “Accept” each time someone begins chatting with you on iChat. There is an undocumented feature in iChat to automatically accept video chats, but there has never been anything for text chats (that I know of) until Chax came along. And that’s not all; Chax adds several additional options to the iChat Preferences, like “automatically accept file transfers” and “open images in Preview on double-click”. It’s a one-time installer, so there’s nothing additional running in the background. Great app!

Alarm Clock 2 is a very useful app. As you would expect, it is an alarm clock that runs on your Mac.
This program is nice for a few reasons. It runs in your menu bar so it doesn’t have to be active in your dock at all times. You can set multiple alarms to go off at different times. You can wake with a tune or an alarm sound. You can set it to go off with “easy wake” which will raise the volume of the alarm over a period of time. And finally, the program can wake your computer from sleep so you don’t have to leave it running all night long.

Introducing the first app in our new “scientific” category: Quantum GIS. Quantum GIS is an open source GIS (Geographic Information System) application that runs on Mac, Windows, and Linux. It’s sort of a professional grade version of Google Earth, allowing you to work with detailed maps in raster, vector, or database format. It also opens files in the format produced by Arc GIS, the very expensive GIS app for which Quantum is a free alternative. This will be a great app for people in the sciences or education who want to do geographic studies without all the expense.

Like MacStumbler, Kismac will let you find available wireless networks as you are mobile with your Mac. However, Kismac KisMAC has much more for professional users. “Unlike most other applications for OS X it has the ability to run completely invisible and send no probe requests.”
This program has been popular recently because of a video that shows one how to use KisMAC to get into a wireless network that is protected with WEP. (More info on that here.)
Even without the extra curricular activities, KisMAC is a powerful and useful program.

Blogassist is an incredible timesaver for people who use HTML (bloggers, web designers, etc.) When started, Blogassist will put a “B” in the menu bar. From the drop down list you’ll find options for adding HTML to text you have copied.
For instance, to link to an image, copy the image URL to your clipboard (using Edit->Copy or Command-C), then select “Image” from Blogassist’s drop down menu, and then paste the resulting text into your application.
The drop down list is customizable and the application runs without an icon in your dock.
(This software has gone the way of the almighty dollar and is no longer free. Bummer.)

FilmLoop is a great way to share photos…especially with those that are technologically challenged.
I first heard of this program at Macworld when Guy Kawasaki was introducing it to an audience.
FilmLoop runs locally on your Mac, but it grabs photos from whatever loops you subscribe too. This is great if your family is scattered across the country. The scenario would be that you drag and drop photos to your local FilmLoop and they will automatically broadcast to everyone else in your social loop. So, have this program running on grandma’s computer and whenever you update your photos, they will scroll across her screen without any effort on her part.
This is a fun program. There are already thousands of publicly available “Loops” that you can subscribe to here.

You may or may not know that besides playing music (and now videos), your iPod can also display notes. (That doesn’t include the iPod Shuffle of course.) After connecting your iPod to your computer, you can simply copy text files into its Notes folder and they’ll be available for on-the-go reading. However, each note is limited to 4 kilobytes of data, which isn’t much. To get around this, you’ll need to split long articles and text into multiple files, and that’s precisely what Text2iPod does.

Bleezer is a free blogging client that works with a lot of the popular blog formats. (Wordpress, Typepad, Blogger, etc.) It has all of the expected features (tags, spell check, pinging) and it is cross platform so you can use it on Windows, Mac OSX and Linux.
So while MarsEdit and ecto are popular choices, you have to pay to play that game. Bleezer is a free and good alternative.
