Wimp is a very simple program which helps you keep tabs on your computer’s ip address. Wimp runs a small program in the background which sends an e-mail to the address of your choice whenever the ip address changes.
As you would imagine, this can be quite useful for controlling a Mac remotely. I have this running on my Mac at home. When the ip changes, I get an email to the account on my Powerbook. I have a rule set up in Mail.app to take the email and file it away immediately. That way, I never see it. Then, when I need to know the latest ip, I go into my archives folder and find the most recent email.
This could also be useful if your computer gets stolen. It would keep track of the location of your Mac and may be able to help you find it. If the operating system was re-installed, of course Wimp would be erased. But, who steals your laptop and then looks around for your install cds? (Note To Self: Take install cds out of laptop bag.)
(This app seems to be missing. If anyone knows a similiar app, please let us know.)

I know it creates fear in many of you to think of downloading a Microsoft product. That fear is justified. But FolderShare may be a diamond in the rough. FolderShare lets you “create a private peer-to-peer network that will help you to synchronize files across multiple devices and access or share files with colleagues and friends.” There is a 2GB maximum per file, but you can make unlimited file transfers.
FolderShare can work between Macs and PCs by making a free account and getting all satellites on that account. So, if you have files at work that you’d like to continue working on when you get home, this will help. Rather than burning it to a cd or putting it on a drive, you can drop it in the folder and when you get home it will be there waiting for you. (This is also a great way to share music with friends and family…but I didn’t say that.)

Rember is a front-end GUI to the ‘memtest’ command line memory testing program. This will allow the user to select the number of test loops, as well as the amount of memory to test. There is a ‘Log’ tab that will allow the user to monitor memory testing. The user can toggle a ‘verbose’ switch to limit the amount of output. Allows user to quit Finder and other applications.
As you would expect, this is quite a useful tool.

Provoc offers a great way to memorize things. Like Genius, Provoc will help you memorize information with repetition. This program has great features like the ability to print to index cards and a great interface to load to your ipod. (There is a video on the site demonstrating this, but I can’t like to it because they use frames. )
The developer’s site also offers some languages that are all ready to use.

Pasteboard Recorder lets you keep in record the last 60 things on your Mac’s Pasteboard. This is especially useful when blogging. I find myself jumping between tabs to get different URL’s and quotes but with Pasteboard Recorder, you can copy them all and then get to them using shortcut keys. Also, the content to record is not limited to text snippets.
The good developer seems to be Japanese so his page is a bit choppy on English, but the app is great.

RooVid Lite helps you get videos ready for your iPod, as well as other places.
The developer of rooVid Lite asked us to take a look at the freeware and I’m glad he did. This freeware let’s you convert videos for use with your iPod…but we’ve already feature a few of those. (iSquint,MovieToGo, ReelBean) Why this one too?
What I like about rooVid Lite is it allows you to create profiles that contain the details for how you want the exported video formatted. Creating the profile is easy, and you can save it for later use. So, this isn’t just for iPod videos. (although that is one of the pre-defined profiles) You can also create different profiles for web viewing. It is nice to have all these pre-defined so you don’t have to mess with the Quicktime settings each time.
The app also has other features like queuing of videos to be converted, drag and drop support, pause / resume individual conversions and the ability to prioritize running conversions.
This app is very well done

I don’t suspect I’ll ever buy another Windows PC, but that doesn’t mean I don’t occasionally have to use one. When I do, there are several free apps that I almost always download. I’ve created a list of those and linked to it from the sidebar:
If you don’t have a Mac
Hopefully this will be useful to those stuck at work, home, school, or Hades without a Mac.
The list isn’t comprehensive, but we’ll add to it occasionally. Now back to our regular programming…

Taco HTML Edit is one of many quality text editors for Mac. This one has a beautiful interface and several functional features: syntax highlighting, code tidying, syntax check, and a hotkey for previewing in a browser.
This app could easily be renamed “Taco PHP Edit” because it is equally functional with PHP as with HTML. It can even do browser previews of PHP code if you specify the location of your PHP binary in the Preferences.
This is a great editor for any web designer, programmer, or student.

This isn’t for the faint of heart, but Fink brings the world of open source to your Mac. Specifically, it allows you to pick from among hundreds of software packages that have been “ported” to Mac OS X from UNIX and Linux.
Linux operating systems usually offer some sort of package management command such “apt-get” or “yum”. Fink provides this same functionality for Mac OS X users in Terminal. You could use Fink to install MySQL, PostgreSQL, gnuplot, amaya, and more.

There are several iTunes controllers on the market, even on the “freeware” market, but this one really seems to have paid attention to the details. It’s incredibly configurable, with system-wide hot keys for controlling play, pause, next, back, and more. The translucent popup window is quite beautiful, and has a large image of the cover art.
