Although there is a ton of great Mac freeware to make you productive, I think that all Mac owners like to be goofy sometimes. In fact, I know this because our most popular freeware of all time is one that lets you shoot your screen. (see Bullet)
Well, iStache is another one of those apps that are just kind of fun to use. When you launch iStache, you can select any picture on your hard drive. Then, you can choose from a list of about 10 different kinds of mustaches. You can make them bigger and smaller to fit any size of face.
So fire up this program, choose friends and enemies, and decorate their face. It’s kind of fun. You know you used to do it to people in magazines. And, all you little brothers out there, here’s your chance to see what you’d look like with facial hair.

I’m quite religious at keeping my address book up to date. I think I’m one of the few people who appreciate when friend, enemies and acquaintances send you those ” I have a new phone number/email/whatever.” I like the info when I need it.
Because I stay on top of my address book, I use it a lot. That is why I really, really, really like TapDex.
Tapdex is brought up with a hotkey that you decide. You can type the person that you are looking for and it will find it in your address book. The reason I like this more than the address book widget is because when it finds the one person you’re looking for, the window will resize to show all the info. Clicking on an email address will open a new message. Clicking on the address or phone number will make it large text so you can see it from across the room.

I’ve already mentioned three of my four favorite widgets (1, 2, 3), this one is the fourth.
We all like to see the cents that trickle in from the Google Adsense on our website. We certainly appreciate those of you who find our Google Ads handy. This widget makes it easy to keep track of the numbers. It will automatically log into your account at a set time interval and show you the last 7 days of adsense stats.
Another nice feature is if you click on the title in the widget, it will bring you to the Adsense website and log you in. This makes it fast to get new ad code or to look at some of the more in depth stats.
This widget will save you from logging in every fifteen minutes to see if you’ve earned anything yet.

Plaxo is an online service that synchronizes your address books. It can synchronize your Palm, Yahoo address book, Microsoft Outlook & Outlook Express, and now the Mac OS X Address Book. With the Plaxo toolbar installed on your Mac, all of your address books stay synchronized across all of your computers. You can also access your address book through the Plaxo website. Plaxo can even email people in your address book and ask them to confirm that their contact info is up to date.

I don’t use a lot of widgets, but there are three that I use every day. This is one of them.
Package Tracker Widget is very well done. You can choose from Fedex, UPS, or DHL. When you put the tracking number in the text field, it will look up the status of the pakage. Then, each time you activate dashboard the status will refresh. When the package is delivered, the widget lights up…just like the smile on your face.
This is incredibly useful if you just ordered a nice new Macbook and you are eagerly anticipating it’s arrival.

As I mentioned yesterday, there are a few versions of Firefox specifically optimized for Mac. BeatnikPad has versions for the G4, G5, and Intel chips. If you have a new Intel-powered Mac, this version of Firefox *should* run faster than the normal version.

A while back, I mentioned the dj softwareDeKstasy. I was informed by a few readers that there was a much better dj freeware option that is still gaining great features. They all pointed me to Mixxx…and they were right.
Mixxx is designed for DJ’ing for both professional and semi-professional users. Mixxx was started in early 2001 as one of the first digital DJ systems. Today Mixxx includes many features common to digital DJ solutions, but also some very unique features: It is free, and runs on all major desktop operating systems. Futhermore Mixxx has a number of key features to help the DJ in the live mix: Beat estimation, parallel visual displays, and support for many DJ input controllers.

We’ve reviewed Firefox before. It’s a great browser, and I personally use both Safari and Firefox every day. Safari is fast and agile, while Firefox’s plugins add functionality I can’t browse without.
Since Firefox is open source, at least two people (that I know of) have taken the initiative to tweak Firefox specifically for Mac OS X, making these optimized builds even faster than the regular Mac version of Firefox. You can download a version specifically for your browser (G3, G4, or G5.)
This version of Firefox has the best icon of the Mac-optimized versions. Tomorrow I’ll review another Mac-optimized version that works with Intel chips.

Several months ago we offered email alerts but the list grew quickly and we didn’t have a good way to manage it so we shut it down. But now FeedBurner offers a “FeedBlitz” service so we signed up for it.
If you’d like to receive email alerts when we post new freeware reviews, simply enter your email address in the box at the left. You’ll be asked to confirm your email address and then you will receive alerts each day that we post (a maximum of 1 per day.) Please contact us if you have anything (good or bad!) to tell us about it.

CocoaBooklet is a nice little application that “lets you create a booklet out of a PDF file, which is known as pages imposition. It is a useful tool to reduce the number of pages that has to be printed, which lets you save a lot of paper.”
I download a lot of pdf files about photography and I like to print them out so I can mark the paper up and keep it in my camera bag. This freeware really comes in handy because 1) it lets me use fewer pages and printer ink because it prints different pages on the same sheet of paper and 2) it makes a booklet that is small and reads like a book.
This is a great app.
