iShowU may not always be free, but while it is, here is a free app for creating screencasts. Screencasts are recordings of the computer screen, often with an audio track narrating what’s going on. With a screencast, you can teach your students how to perform certain tasks on the computer, or show your future customers how your program works. Show them instead of tell them.
iShowU is brand new and may still have some quirks, but creators Shiny White Box are working hard on it and it looks very promising.
Update: This application is no longer freeware. Bummer. Another one bites the dust.

I suppose the title says it all; this app measures the temperature of your Mac’s processing chip, whether PowerPC or Intel. It’s useful both for diagnosing heat related issues and for amusement. It can display Celsius or Fahrenheit, and the temperature also appears in the Dock icon and Menu bar. Get it while it’s hot.

XShelf is a rest stop for your drag and drop operations. For instance, you might want to drag a file from your digital camera to a CD but you haven’t yet inserted a CD. Drag the files to XShelf and then after you’ve inserted a blank CD, drag them out of XShelf to the CD. The files aren’t actually copied to XShelf; it’s just a way to temporarily pause a drag and drop.

Last summer I visited Belo Horizonte, Brazil and I still keep in contact with friends there. When I write emails in Portuguese, I use USInternational. This keyboard layout makes it easy to write the accents. For example, to write a cedilha, you type the comma then the letter “c”, which is different from the behavior of the Brazilian keyboard layout that comes with Mac OS X. I like this behavior much better.
Coincidentally, the developer of USInternational also lives in Belo Horizonte. I’ll have to buy him a guaraná next time I’m there.

Quicksilver is the Swiss army knife in this category, but if you want a much simpler application launcher, try Namely. Namely can be activated with a keyboard shortcut. Then simply type a few letters of the application you want to launch and hit Enter. The application is opened and Namely gets out of your way.

A few days ago, we posted about getting Last.fm to play in iTunes. Another incredible option for radio on the internet is Pandora.com. In fact, I think that Pandora.com is one of the top three ways to find new music.
PandoraMan is a “small cocoa app to run the Pandora mini player using WebKit. Created so you can quit Safari/Camino/etc without killing your music stream.” As you listen to the tunes, you can click on the cover art and “train” the service on the music that you like. You can also get the link to iTunes or Amazon.
So fire up Pandoraman, create a few stations for yourself by naming an artist that you like, and you will certainly find some great music. I have a fairly large music collection in iTunes, but after a while I get tired of my stuff and want to hear something new. This app makes it so convenient.

Latin for “I saw”, Vidi is a fitting name for an application that records video. It’s perfect for recording TV shows through a video capture device because it’s more lightweight than iMovie, and it can be scheduled to record at a certain time, in the background.
It will work with any Firewire capture device, but if you use it with a Formac device, you can also use Vidi to change the channel, adjust video settings, and in some cases record FM radio.

If you’ve used the internet, you’ve probably visited Boing Boing: A Directory of Wonderful Things. When it comes to breaking news, interesting stories or anything “wonderful”, Boing Boing is unrivaled.
We enjoy their site so much that we created a Dashboard widget to keep up on the latest posts. Today, I emailed the writers and they gave permission for FreeMacWare.com to make this widget publicly available. We’re quite excited and hope you are too.
So, to go along with our own widget, we are happy to offer the Boing Boing widget. Just keep it in your Dashboard and each time you refresh it will update with the latest posts.

You may have noticed already, but at the bottom of each single post there is now a “Email This Post To A Friend” link.
If you click on this link, a small new window will open, ask you for the info, and then send the post off to your friend. There have been a few of you who asked for this feature and we hope that many more of you will use it. Obviously it is good for the site when you spread the news, and surely you’ll be able to help out friends and family on how to better use their Mac.
To be sure that this is not used for the wrong reason, there is a limit of one email every ten minutes. But, you can put up to 5 addresses in the email field so that should be useful.

Like Pandora, Last.fm is a free online “radio” where you get to choose the music. You can choose, for example, to play music similar to Jason Mraz or any artist. You can also search by keyword.
Last.fm also has an iTunes plugin that will pay attention to what music you listen to in your own iTunes library and tailor your “radio station” to include similar music.
(If you’re looking for good, hand-selected music, check out freemacmusic.com.)
There is even a Macosxhints.com hint about how to get your Last.fm radio station into iTunes.
