There are many application launchers, but Butler is the only fully-featured one comparable to Quicksilver. It wouldn’t do it justice to call it just an application launcher, though it certainly does that. It can be used to assign keyboard shortcuts or mouse movements to almost any action. You can even set up mouse actions at the top, bottom, left, or right of the screen (instead of the usual diagonal corners). You can type a Google search before your browser is open (it will open directly to the results page) or type abbreviations to have them expanded into full words or sentences. This application is almost infinitely flexible in helping you improve your productivity.

OnMyCommand gives you more flexibility in your contextual menus (usually accessed by right-clicking.) It comes with several commands, such as right-clicking to send a file by email or to move a file, but it also allows you to create your own commands. For example, you could create a contextual command to “send picture to Grandma” or “print document to color printer.” It can make any Applescript or Unix command into a contextual option.
David Kadavy has a tutorial on how to use OnMyCommand.

LiquidCD makes it easy to burn almost any kind of CD or DVD. Not that this functionality isn’t mostly native to Mac OS X, but LiquidCD puts it right at your fingertips. You can burn an audio, MP3, or picture CD, burn an .iso, .dmg, .cue/bin, or .toast image, or even duplicate a DVD.
This freeware really comes in handy when you want to burn a music or audio file to a disk quickly. For example, I download college lectures from the internet. Rather than copying it to iTunes, making a playlist with the file, burning it to a cd to listen to in my truck, and then deleting the file back out of iTunes, it’s much easier to just drop it in LiquidCD and burn it there. It’s also nice for audiobooks that don’t really need to be in the iTunes library because you’ll never listen to them again.

Flock is another web browser for Mac OS X. Built on Firefox, Flock has all the features you’d expect from a modern browser like tabbed browing and integrated Google search. But what’s more, it also has fancy features like built-in support for photos, blogging, online bookmarks, and news. This could be called the browser for Web 2.0.
Safari is fast,
Flock is a blast,
Firefox’s options are vast,
Camino is Firefox recast, and
Internet Explorer’s day is past.

Journler is among the best examples of the variety and depth of quality freeware available for Mac OS X. It’s also a great example of what generous Mac developers give the community through their freeware applications.
Like MacJournal, Journler is a journal/diary application. You might use this to record your day to day ramblings, class notes, work plans, etc. You can keep multiple journals, and journals can be organized into folders. Your journal entries can by styled with any font or color, and you can import music, movies, and photos from iLife. At the press of a button you can export an entry to iWeb or send it by Mail. This is a fantastic app for tracking your life.

Just in time for the weekend, let Steve Jobs join you at your dance party. This plugin for iTunes turns the Visualizer (Command-T in iTunes) into a dancing “rag doll” of Steve himself. Bet you didn’t know someone could move so well in jeans and a turtleneck.

iPhoto Batch Enhancer is a tool to make using iPhoto a little bit simpler. It helps to apply the built in effects (enhance, black-white and sepia plus even more in iPhoto 6) as well as the adjust-palette with a few mouse clicks to your selection of photos.
This last weekend I shot my sister’s wedding and this program sure saved me a lot of time.

MenuShade simply dims out the menu bar when it’s not in use. It’s sort of like hiding the Dock; it might help you stay focused on the window you have open and stay on task. (If you also want to avoid distractions on your Desktop, try Backdrop.)

Apple’s iCal can help you share your schedule by publishing calendars to .Mac and WebDAV servers. Because .Mac is expensive and WebDAV can be hard to come by, Scalp is a tiny hack for iCal that allows calendars to be published to the Web via FTP and SFTP.
Its name is the unfortunate result of combining “cal” and “scp”, the command used to copy files via SSH.
There is an easy installer included, and also instructions for those who like to do it themselves.

All the newest Powerbooks and MacBook Pros have a “Sudden Motion Sensor” for the hard drive. This is there to stop the disk from spinning if the computer senses that it is being dropped. This is done to attempt to save your data. But, what fun is a feature that you can only use when something goes wrong. SMSRotateD will let you play with this Sudden Motion Sensor (SMS) in the mean time.
Once installed, your screen will rotate as you rotate your laptop. (There is a video on the site.) Not real useful…unless you’re reading a really long document. But, it’s fun. Install SMSRotateD and SmackBook and you can really have a fun time with that sensor of yours.
