Doodim

During my most recent trip to Macworld, I noticed that a lot of the presenters had very cluttered screens when they gave their presentations. As soon as they would come out of Keynote, there would be a ton of different windows and all kinds of icons. I’d often be distracted with what was going on everywhere on the screen. This program could have really come in useful.

Doodim dims all others windows and the desktop so all that is left is the foremost app, the menu and the dock. Once running, the brightness level is set in the menu bar. You can choose Dim, Dimmer or Black.

This program could be similar to Backdrop, but maybe it has a bit of an edge because it dims out the desktop AND the other windows. Try both, they’re free.

(Note, it looks like the sudden popularity has brought the site down. We have a temporary download here. It looks like the site is all good again. But, since I’m updating this post, I will take this opportunity to say that FMW reader Jerome wrote in to say, ” The makers of Doodim missed a great opportunity. They could have called the program DimSome.” I think that’s really funny. )

Kip is a nice application for those of you who like to stay organized. It is basically iPhoto, but for your documents. It has built in scanning so you can scan your receipts into the program. Given, iPhoto could do this too, but Kip beats iPhoto in the tagging abilities. (Why does iPhoto make it so hard to tag photos without the help of good freeware like Keyword Assistant?)

So get ready for tax season by scanning in all your receipts.

Kip looks like a great program. So good that it looks like they’ll be charging for it after a while. But for now it is free so get it while the getting is good. (Note to developers, please don’t force an upgrade to the paid version when it is released. That would totally take back the good will shown by offering a free version first. )

Update: It looks like this app has gone the way of the almighty dollar. Bummer.

Here’s one for the digital comics fans. FFView reads archive types, including .ZIP, .RAR, .CBR, and .CBZ, as well as TIFFs, GIFs, JPEGs, and PNGs. Though it can be used for viewing other images (not just comics), FFView is especially designed for digital comics and has many features and preference options to customize the experience, including Western or Manga views, a magnifying lens, zooming, and various control options. The Help feature is also very handy and informative for learning your way around the program.

Comical, another comics reader, has a nice interface and an easy-to-usabilty (I made that up just now), and is worthy of mention as an alternative. However, it seems that FFView is a stronger choice overall, and I give it the gold star.

This one’s just for looks I suppose, but it’s very clever. DockArt is a plugin for iTunes that will replace the Dock’s iTunes icon with the album artwork of whatever song happens to be playing at the moment. It’s very cool.

Place the .bundle file in Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins, then restart iTunes. There will be a new DockArt entry in the Visualizer menu up top, but you don’t even need to select it.

If the current song has no artwork, the regular iTunes menu will show.

Launchers are a common form of Mac freeware. I don’t need to tell you that. Todos puts a new spin on the idea, though, and may be ideal for those that respond primarily to visuals. Use Cmd+Ctrl+Opt+T to invoke Todos, bringing up a large, pretty window filled with a tiny icon of each and every app you’ve got. Double click the apps you’d like to open, then use the same key combo to close the window.

Staying with the “icons” topic, let me introduce FinderIconCM, a contextual menu with a purpose similar to that of Micon. This little app rounds off the triumvirate of icon/thumbnail apps that I’ve used for many months.

CocoThumbX is good for replacing generic image icons with actual thumbnails of the pictures. Micon and FinderIconCM are both good for copying/pasting icons to and from items, and can handle large selections of items at once. While Micon uses a drop well and has an icon history menu, FinderIconCM rests in the Finder’s right-click menu and has a “Stock” where you can save up to 80 icons for later use.

FinderIconCM also has a “Create Folder Icon” option where you can combine the icon of the selected item with system icons, like a folder, document, or volume, thus creating a new icon out of two. For example, if you have a folder filled with text files and want to know what’s inside by just looking at the folder, you can make a new icon of a text document superimposed on the icon of a folder.

This one’s lots of fun and very versatile, so be sure to explore it’s features fully.

I’ve always liked this one. And so will anyone else who has used the Inspector or Get Info options in the Finder to change an icon before. Micon does it much quicker. Drop the folder or file with the desired icon into the FileWell on the left, then drop the folder/file whose icon is to be changed in the Well on the right and hit “Set.” That’s easy. Now consider that Micon lets you drag-and-drop great multitudes of files into the right FileWell and change them all at once. And then there’s the incredibly handy History menu to remember icons that you have previously bestowed, as well as contextual menus and a mini-manual for easy instructions (as if the program weren’t intuitive enough).

At the top of the FreeMacWare sidebar, you’ll see a section titled “FreeMacWare Supporters”. If you would like to have a link to your site in that area, you can click you can click the “Advertise” link or visit Text-Link-Ads.com. Purchasing a link will keep you listed in the sidebar for a full month. In that time, it will be viewed nearly 800,000 times. We have placed the links prominently so they will be easily seen by all FMW readers.

We hope that these links will benefit those who will decide to be listed there. Also, we encourage all our readers to visit the sites and see what is there. Detour is an app for sending audio from a specific application to a specific output. From Detour’s site:

“Technically speaking, Detour allows you to send audio to different output devices on an application-specific basis. What does that mean exactly? It means you can…

…send music from iTunes to your external USB speakers and keep the annoying beeps and blips of iChat going through your computer’s built-in speaker.

…mute any application’s sounds all together.

…change the volume of some applications relative to others. Make your email client’s alerts quieter, and you’ll never again be jarred from work just to receive spam.”

That’s about all the explanation that’s necessary. Cool app.
