As more and more Windows users come to the Mac platform there will be a large need for converting Windows Media Audio (WMA) files to MP3. The most popular software to do this seems to be EasyWMA. It’s a good program, but it costs $10. Well, FreeMacWare comes to the resuce.

I present to you Switch. This program is well built and offers good features. You can convert “a variety of audio file formats to mp3 or wav such as wav, mp3, ogg, flac, aac, wma, au, aiff, ogg, msv, dvf, vox, atrac, etc.” Another nice feature is the batch processing. Switch “allows up to 32000 files to be converted in one batch.” Wow.

As many of you have probably noticed, we’ve decided to have a new look here at FreeMacWare. We may still tweak a few things, but mostly we are satisfied with the new look. If it hasn’t changed for you yet…it’s coming. We also switched servers so the DNS is still propagating. The popularity of the site was too much for our old hosting plan so we put the sites on a machine of their own. We recognize that the site grows thanks to so many of you telling friends and posting about us on your blog. For that we are thankful.

In additon to the new look, we’re also introducing two new sites for a total of five. Below you’ll find the descriptions of each.

FreeMacWare- FreeMacWare find the best free applications in the world of OS X software. We review each application and write a post with out thoughts. There is one a day, Monday thru Saturday.

FreeMacBlog- At FreeMacBlog you’ll find a variety of posts. Tutorials, interesting tidbits about Apple, tips on using Mac OS X. The posts cover a mix of topics.

FreeMacMusic- The only thing better than a good tune is sharing that tune with a friend. On FreeMacMusic, we post bout some of our favorite music. Everything from Merle Haggard to the latest rap song.

FreeMacPhoto- FreeMacPhoto deals with photography in general, but adds a special Mac flavor to it. If you are into photography, or would like to learn more about it, you’ll find things of interest here. This site also serves as a place to show your best photos. Just submit them to the FreeMacPhoto Flickr Group.

FreeMacUnix The secret to the power of Mac OS X is found in it’s Unix foundation. If you’ve ever wanted to learn the power of Unix, FMU is the place to start.

I’m not sure how often newsgroups like Usenet are used anymore, but if you use them you’ll want to check out iGrabNews. “iGrabNews is a fast, efficient, powerful, binary news browser and download manager.”

It really is the fastest and lightest news browser I’ve ever used.

I have reviewed a couple DJ applications in the past (1,2), but djay tops them both.

The interface is incredibly simple. It has perfect integration with iTunes. (In fact, dragging an image over to the turn tables looks like you are loading a record.) You’ll see easy to understand controls. Also, if you press the button that reads “RPM”, you’ll be instructed to beat the tempo of each tune and then you can sync them automatically.

Great software!

This is a really interesting application. You start it up and and a little image is installed in your menu bar. “Thanks to it’s very simple and unobtrusive interface you will be able to configure desktopia to automatically change your desktop picture based on a specified time of the day. For example a beautiful sunrise at 7:00AM or a starry sky at 10:00PM. Just drag&drop the pictures that you have chosen on desktopia’s window, set the time, and voilà ! Like they say… “set it, and forget it!”

And you know it’s good. It comes from the same fella that gave us Sidenote.

Hey Folders! offers something  Mac OS X probably should have right from the start. Hey Folders! gives all your folders with color labels a colored folder icon to match. As you change folders’ color labels, the colored icons update automatically. Cool.

Note: Finder must be restarted for the changes to take effect (it might be convenient to put Hey Folders! in your Startup Items).

Ever write an email to someone telling them about the exciting picture/file/whatever that you are attaching to the email, and then hit Send without remembering to actually attach the file? This plugin goes unnoticed until this moment. When your message includes words that indicate an attachment, but you hit Send without attaching anything, Attachment Scanner Plugin for Mail.app asks if you meant to send an attachment, giving you a chance to fix your mistake and maybe save a little face.

keyboardSee

keyboardSee has blown my mind. This simple app (called “Keyboard viewer” on the download page) is just so useful. Like most good apps, it has a specific purpose. This one shows you the layout of all the keyboard setups on your computer. I use Spanish and Portuguese setups a lot, but can never remember where the various accents and punctuation keys are. Three minutes with keyboardSee taught me all of them. Just seeing the keys laid out makes a big difference.

Don’t forget that Shift/Caps Lock will show you new keys. And don’t overlook the options down on the bottom. The Scale slider alters the size of the keyboard, and the Current button jumps to the keyboard layout currently being used on your system (in case it wasn’t already there).

Since keyboardSee lights up keys as you type, you may even find it helpful for working on your type speed.
