Email Backup is an easy to use, automated email backup solution. It allows for scheduled backups of the most common email applications through the configuration of a simple interface.

FlightGear is the most advanced flight simulation software I have ever seen. You can choose your plane and your airport and off you go. For those of you who like flight simulation, freeware doesn’t get any more amazing than this.

I will offer two warnings though. The app is huge. Over 200MB when unzipped. And it does take a bit of time and training to actually learn how to fly. I assume it’s similar to real flying.

File Mutation is a File Conversion Application for a fast solution to converting File formats of graphic and image file formats. Preview.app does a pretty good job at this as well, but it’s so fast and convenient with File Mutation.

File Mutation can read “Convert From” These File Formats: PICT, BMP, GIF, JPEG, JPEG2, SGI, TGA, PDF, PNG, TIFF, TEXT, QuickTime Image, MacPaint, Photoshop, PSD.

File Mutation can write to “Convert To” PICT, PSD, BMP, JPEG, PNG, TIFF.

(I’m always bummed when a well programmed app doesn’t have a nice icon. A nice icon seems like such a easy way to add more credibility to your app. Oh well, this is still a good app.)

I probably visit Wikipeida.org 10 or 20 times a day. It’s where I go to learn about random things. And once I’m there, I usually click on different links to learn more about other things. It’s a never ending cycle. That’s why I like to play with Pathway.

Pathway is an application that will let you work directly with Wikipedia. As you click around , the app will be sure you don’t get lost. “It accomplishes this by presenting you with a graphical “network” representation of your visited article pages. A node represents an article, a connection between two nodes means, of course, that you’ve gone from the first article to the second one. You can save the network you’ve created to disk and recover it. This way, you’re able to keep track of everything: what you’ve looked at, how you get there end(sic) just how it all fits together.”

SMTp stands for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. The protocol is what is used to allow you to send email with programs like Mail.app.

Sometimes, it is a pain to have the right SMTP server. Your ISP probably provides one, Gmail does, maybe your place of work does. This free utility helps Mac users set up a full SMTP mail server in less than a minute. RapidoSMTP allows you to turn on the Postfix SMTP server built into Mac OS X, which will allow you to send mail out the command line, from PHP, or from Mac OS X applications like Apple Mail, Eudora or Microsoft Entourage.

Here’s an easy way to measure (in pixels) the size of different objects on your screen. Rula is similar in principle to Free Ruler, but instead of bringing up an onscreen ruler, allows you to just draw a marquee right over the object/window you want to measure, telling you the height and width of the drawn marquee.

Clutter is an alternate way of deciding what song to play next, displaying your music collection as CD covers spread across your desktop. As you listen to music, just drag the covers from the Now Playing window onto your desktop to fill your screen with them. You can drag the album covers around the desktop to arrange them however you like, and double-click them to play the album. A cool app for those that enjoy a little visual clutter in their lives.

I love the software that comes with Mac OS X. I think most people do. But that doesn’t mean there can’t be some improvements. Here are the freeware apps I use to enhance Apple’s software. These are usually the first I recommend to new Mac users.

Mail.app

Letterbox - Takes advantage of the widescreens on most Macs by showing your mail in three columns.
Mail Act-On - A great way to file emails quickly.
Mail.appetizer - An automatic heads-up display when new mail arrives. It provides an option to turn it off while Mail.app is active.

iCal
iCal Events Widget - This widget lets you take a look at your calendar without having iCal open.

Address Book
Tapdex - Let’s you access your address book with a keyboard short-cut. As soon as the person is found, the window will expand with the info. Also, selecting a number of address will enlarge the text on the screen.

iTunes
Sizzling Keys - Shortcuts to do everything. Forward, back, pause, stop, etc.
iTunes Links - The little arrows next to the songs will jump to that artist or album in your collection rather than on the iTunes Music Store. This is reversible.

Quicktime
Windows Media Compenents for Quicktime - will let you want Windows Media files in Quicktime. It also offers support for in-browser videos.

iChat
Chax - Does just about everything you’d want to be done in iChat. Enables tabbed chatting. The two most useful ones for me is automatically resize buddy window to show online buddies and accept incoming chats automatically. The latter is a great feature.

iPhoto
KeyWord Assistant - The quickest way to tag your photos with keywords. I have all of my photos tagged so I when I search “Grandma Stucki” in spotlight, all of the photos come up of her. It’s quite impressing when you show others, and gives you a fast way to check out all your photos.
