As many of our regular visitors have probably noticed, there have been a few issues with the sites today. Not only was there a story on the homepage of digg pointing to FreeMacWare.com. But, there was a second story on the homepage of digg pointing to a post on FreeMacBlog.
Two digg effects (is that a noun?) in one day is a lot to handle. By coincidence, we were doing a little web site cleaning this weekend as well so we didn’t really have our best foot forward.
But, obviously we are excited for the traffic and all the new visitors.
If you are new to FreeMacWare, we post a new freeware app every weekday. We don’t try to get all freeware, just the best and most useful. You can keep up with the RSS Feed, the FreeMacWare Dashboard Widget or signing up for email updates in the sidebar.
We’ll get all of this sorted out and post a new freeware app in the morning like usual.

It’s funny. We used to avoid hitting our record and cd players because we didn’t want to make the music skip. But now that we’re digital, here is an app that skips the music on purpose when you hit.
Okay, it’s actually a little cooler than that.
With the free program running on your Apple laptop, you can tap the side of your machine and skip to the next song in iTunes. Of course, you’ll need to have one of the laptops with a Sudden Motion Sensor inside. But if you have that, it’s an easy startup.

While I was looking at the different Mac Options For Capturing A Video of Your Screen, I found KeyCastr and was really impressed. When activated, you can have a little window pop up to show what you are typing on your keyboard. For example, if you are making a video screencast, but you are not recording sound, you don’t always have a way to show your audience what you are doing. With KeyCastr activated, a window will pop up showing the text that you type. Almost like subtitles for your video.
Even better, if you mention a website that may be hard to spell out. You can type it across the bottom of your screen so your viewers know the URL. This is a great tool for video podcasters.

Over on FreeMacBlog, we are continuing in our series on how to set up your Mac to act like a server. As I mentioned before, all tutorials are done with Mac OS X (not Mac OS X Server) so anyone with a Mac should be able to set this up with no extra cost for themselves. The videos are explain everything in simple terms so even beginners should feel comfortable. You can then use the server at your house, or use a Mac hosting service like Macminicolo to have your own server in a high scale data center.
There are six videos so far (which I will list below) and there are more to come including setting up a Mail server.

Piclens is an incredible Safari plugin that helps you view online pictures in a slideshow. It works with sites like Flickr, Facebook and Google Image Searches.
To install, just download the package and run the installer. You’ll have to restart Safari to activate the plugin. Once installed, anytime you mouseover thumbnails on a page there will be a little icon that pops up. Clicking on that icon will create a slideshow of all the pictures on that page. It’s much like a iPhoto slideshow, but pulling pictures from the internet. When you’re done, just hit “esc” or click on the x in the corner.
I really wouldn’t be surprised to see this feature built into Safari once Apple sees this plugin. It works and looks great.

Klondike Forever is a great solitaire application with some very nice features. It may be the best Solitaire app for the Mac. (No offense to Solitaire XL. I love that clean look too.)
There are many types of Solitaire, but Klondike is the most popular by far. I love this version because it makes it fast to play the game. Instead of dragging the card to where it needs to go, just click it and it will fly to it’s place. Also, whenever a card is ready to be stacked in the four ace piles, it will fly up on it’s own. (As a bonus, it won’t fly up until it is used completely in the bottom. That’s smart.)
Oh, you all know how to play Klondike, just go give it a try. You’ll be surprised how nice it’s done. (And it can go full screen.)
(If you want to try 100 other types of solitaire, try the developer’s Solitaire Forever.)

Backlight lets you run any of your screen savers as your Desktop background. When you open Backlight a triangle-shaped logo will appear in your menu bar. From that menu you can select which screen saver you want and then select “Start”. It’s pretty cool to see a screen saver running behind all of your icons and windows! (And it becomes virtually impossible to stay focused on any work!)

Aptana is an open source Web IDE, an application for creating web sites — like Dreamweaver. It includes support for HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, and XML. If you forget a Javascript command, use Aptana’s built-in reference manual. Other features include tabs, a debugger, syntax highlighting, and multiple panes. Aptana is also available for Windows and Linux, and as an Eclipse plugin. If you design or develop web sites, give Aptana a try.

If you’re like me, your del.icio.us bookmark account grows quite fast. I’m just about to 1,500 links and I haven’t been using it real long. With tags and search, it’s not too hard to find the link that you are looking for, but this app definitely makes it easier because it cleans out the useless links. “Dead.licious is a tool for verifying that all of your bookmarks in your del.icio.us accounts are still valid and gives you the option of removing those dead links.”
This program is brand new, but it is really useful and well thought out. Kudos to the developer for this idea and if you have any feature requests, he’s taking suggestions.

This won’t always be free, but while it is I think it will be interesting to many of you. If your Mac has an Intel chip, CrossOver Mac is another way of running Windows programs. The major difference between this app and competing products like Parallels or Bootcamp is that CrossOver doesn’t require you to own a copy of Windows. Instead of emulating a PC, CrossOver emulates Windows itself, so Bill doesn’t make a dime when you use CrossOver. This won’t work with every Windows program, but it’s worth a try if you need this sort of functionality.
UPDATE: I’ve had a couple of reports of this application not working very well. It’s definitely in beta form and only works with a handful of applications. (I’ve seen Bootcamp and Parallels in action and they work like champs.) I can only recommend CrossOver if you’re adventurous. This probably won’t be the right thing for most people.
