Don’t judge this app by its icon. This is an awesome Safari plugin that adds a ton of extra functionality to the browser. With SafariStand you can do the following:
- Save groups of bookmarks
- View thumbnails of all your open tabs
- Cause links that open in a new window to open in a new tab instead
- Do quick Google searches by typing the letter “g” and your search
- Create any number of “quick searches”
- Automatically close the Download window
- Block GIF animations
- Turn the Debug menu on and off
- Colorize the HTML in View Source
- …and more.
Be sure to check out the screenshot on this one.

OneButton is an FTP program. It lets you send and receive files by FTP — great if you’re a web designer or need to put photos on your web server. It has the interesting feature of not transferring the files until you hit the Play button. I think I prefer turning on the “Start queue immediately” in the Preferences.

Minuteur is a timer. It can count down or up, and it sounds uncannily like a real egg timer. The app is very well done, including some cool features like full screen and float-on-top.

Most operating systems use file extensions (endings) to distinguish files from each other. For example, if a file ends with “.psd” it’s usually a Photoshop file, or if it ends with “.txt” it’s usually a text file. But Mac OS X also allows files to be marked with 4-digit Type and Creator codes. These Type and Creator codes override the file extensions. For example, you can mark a file with the code “8BIM” and then Mac OS X will know it’s a Photoshop file, even if it doesn’t have a “.psd” ending.
iLikeYouMore allows you to easily change the Type and Creator codes of any file. You can also use iLikeYouMore to erase these Type and Creator codes, which can be useful for applications like BBEdit, which adds its Creator code to any files it can get its hands on, even if your default application for those files is something else.

Glider Pro is a game that has been around for a few years and has been a Mac classic. You control a paper airplane and make your way thru different houses. It’s now free. The message from the developer’s site:
Welcome. Since Casady & Greene Inc. went bankrupt, the rights to the game Glider have reverted to me, the author. To that end, Glider PRO and Glider 4.0 are now free and I am giving them away for free download on this web site. Casady and Greene were a wonderful company and I am sorry to see them pass into Macintosh history.
It’s a nice little game and has a jamming sountrack.
(Bummer, it looks like we used all the bandwidth. I think this is the first time that a server was “FreeMacWared.” Hopefully we’ll see it back soon. For now, you can use this link. )

If you’re feeling creative, SketchUp from Google could be fun. Sketchup “is an easy-to-learn 3D modeling program that enables you to explore the world in 3D. With just a few simple tools, you can create 3D models of houses, sheds, decks, home additions, woodworking projects - even space ships. And once you’ve built your models, you can place them in Google Earth.”
FMW reader Ryan was kind enough to send in some of his work for the screenshot.

HamachiX is the frontend for Mac OS X to hamachi, a secure mediated VPN client. (VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and it allows you to see local services from afar including shared drives, printers, and Bonjour chatting.
Mac OS X has some VPN capabilites built in, but nothing like HamachiX can offer. My boss and I played with it for a while yesterday and were amazed. It has an amazing ability to make its way thru firewalls and doesn’t need port forwarding. This means that you can set it up on your parent’s computer and take it over with ease and security.
In order for it to work, you create a network with the hamachi service. The free service is very capable, but there is also a premium service that is priced quite fair.
There is a bit of a learning curve on this app. I’ve created a tutorial on “How To set up a VPN with HamachiX.”

All new Macs come with Garageband, but that doesn’t rule out the use of other great music apps. Hydrogen is a drum machine for your Mac. “It’s main goal is to bring professional yet simple and intuitive pattern-based drum programming.” Once you grab the app and get used to it, don’t forget to check out the twenty other available sound libraries for the drum machine.
(PS, we usually don’t include system requirements because they are constantly changing and we can’t keep up the 500+ posts. We encourage you to click thru to the developer’s site and take a look there. But, I will include a mention on this one because I don’t see it anywhere on the developer’s site. This program seems to be compiled for Intel Macs only.)

Fenêtres Volantes — French for “flying windows” — is an awesome screensaver that causes all of your open windows to fly around the screen. If you use your screensaver to lock your screen while you’re away, then this isn’t for you (since it allows passers-by to read what’s on your screen) but the effect is really cool.

By user request, we’re going to start posting screenshots of most applications we review. There’s no substitute for trying an app yourself, but a screenshot can at least give you an idea of what to expect. It won’t work for screensavers and a small number of others, but for most future Freemacware.com reviews you’ll see a “Screenshot” link near the bottom of each review. We hope you like it.
