If you use SSH, SSHKeyChain may become your new best friend. Like JellyFiSSH, it brings Mac OS X ease of use to a the Unix utility SSH.

SSH is used to connect to another computer to operate it or to copy files. You can save SSH “keys” so you don’t have to type your password, but these keys usually sit in your home directory with little protection. SSHKeyChain brings security and convenience to the mix, intregrating the SSH keys into the Mac OS X Keychain. It can also remove the keys after a set amount of time or after the screensaver turns on. SSHKeyChain makes it much easier to work with SSH, a must for any Mac programmer.

It can also manage SSH tunnels.

Warning: Time waster ahead.

Lumen is a simple and beautiful puzzle game for OS X and Windows. The objective is to light up checkpoints by bouncing, coloring, and maneuvering a laser beam through obstacles. Although puzzles may seem easy at first sight, the can be quite a challenge. The careful attention to detail and the colorful graphics make Lumen a joy to play.

(And what a great looking site too!)

Passing the reigns

If you're new to Freemacware.com and like what you see, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed or signup for our emails at the right. We'll send you one Mac freeware application every day. Thanks for visiting!

After almost 2 years of running Freemacware.com, we have decided to pass the reigns. This weekend, ownership and editorial control of Freemacware.com and the sister sites will pass to the good folks at iEntry, a web publishing company in Kentucky.

We’ve loved writing on the Freemac* sites, getting to know all of you Mac users and developers and finding tons of great freeware apps as we’ve gone. While we’ll miss writing on Freemacware, Brian and his wife are getting ready to have their first baby, and Richard is studying for law school, so it was time for us to move on. We’ll still be subscribers like all of you.

The folks at iEntry have assured us that Freemacware.com will continue on as usual. Actually, it’s likely to be even better since it will have the resources of a full company instead of two guys with day jobs.

All our best!
Brian & Richard

Mozy

You should be backing up your Mac. You know you should. And now with Mozy, you have no excuse not to backup.

Mozy is a free client that will let you backup with ease to the Mozy online service. It’s been around for PCs for a while and just recently offered the service for Macs. Just sign up and install the client, pick which files to back up, and off you go. It’s all automatic from there on out.

I can hear you already. “If this is a paid service, why is this freeware on FMW?”

The great thing about Mozy is they offer 2GB of storage with free accounts. That should be enough to get your most important documents and photos at least. For me, I scanned my important documents, put it in an encrypted disk image, and then uploaded it for safe keeping. And if you need more space, the price is only $5/mo for unlimited storage. Though not free, that is hard to beat.

Now there is no excuse not to backup your data.

Serial Mail

I know that nearly everyone shudders at the mention of “bulk email” but sometimes there is a legit reason for sending an email to a large group. For instance, recently I found something interesting about my family history. I wanted to tell my large family about this find, but putting the full list of email addresses in my “To:” field may have put up some flags of spam with some email providers. This is where Serial Mail comes in.

With Serial Mail, you just put all the recipients into a group in your Address Book. Then, you create a draft of the email in Mail.app. Once it is saved as a draft, you highlight it and run Serial Mail. This app will create a separate email for each address in the group and send it along to that person.

As you can imagine, this would work well for coaches, scout leaders, teachers, business owners and anyone else who has a large group that they lead. It worked great for me. Even with all 112 family members.

WakeOnLan will let you find other Macs on the network and bring them out of Sleep mode.

When I’m not working on my iMac, I’m usually sitting on my couch working on my Macbook. I like to work in the living room because that is where the HDTV is located. When it comes time to fire up the Apple TV and watch some shows, it’s always a bummer to see that the iMac has gone to sleep and is now unable to stream all of our TV Shows. This is where WakeOnLan comes in. Just fire up the app and you’ll be able to wake up any Mac on the local network. It will also allow you to put it back to sleep.

This is the game of pong but more powerful and interesting and psychedelic and mesmerizing and lickable.

In the game you can inject plasma fluid into the environment, create a vacuum from your paddle, and blast shockwaves into the playing area. All these abilities have fluid-based kinetic effects on the ball, making Plasma Pong a fast-paced and exciting game.

If you have a big screen and some nice speakers, you could really get lost in this game.

Based on Unix utilities psync and cron, PsyncX is a utility for doing automated backups. You simply choose what you want to back up, where to backup to, and then a time for the backup. PsyncX sets a cron job to run the backup at that time. If you have an external hard disk connected to your computer, or your iPod with disk mode enabled, this is a great way to backup regularly.

Newer Macs come with an option not only to sleep but to deep sleep. Your Mac draws a very small amount of power while sleeping to save the contents of its memory. When deep sleeping, the memory is saved to the hard disk and then the computer draws no power at all.

Apple doesn’t provide a “deep sleep” option so you’ll need an application like this one to try it. It’s aptly named.
