Book cataloging has traditionally been a very tedious and time-consuming task. First, all all of the books need to be gathered in a single place and someone painstakingly goes through each book, writing down the title, authors, when it was published, and so on. Prior to computerization most professional libraries hired staff to do this and the result was the venerable card catalog.
