You should be backing up your Mac. You know you should. And now with Mozy, you have no excuse not to backup.

Mozy is a free client that will let you backup with ease to the Mozy online service. It’s been around for PCs for a while and just recently offered the service for Macs. Just sign up and install the client, pick which files to back up, and off you go. It’s all automatic from there on out.

I can hear you already. “If this is a paid service, why is this freeware on FMW?”

The great thing about Mozy is they offer 2GB of storage with free accounts. That should be enough to get your most important documents and photos at least. For me, I scanned my important documents, put it in an encrypted disk image, and then uploaded it for safe keeping. And if you need more space, the price is only $5/mo for unlimited storage. Though not free, that is hard to beat.

Now there is no excuse not to backup your data.

Based on Unix utilities psync and cron, PsyncX is a utility for doing automated backups. You simply choose what you want to back up, where to backup to, and then a time for the backup. PsyncX sets a cron job to run the backup at that time. If you have an external hard disk connected to your computer, or your iPod with disk mode enabled, this is a great way to backup regularly.

JellyfiSSH is a GUI frontend to the ssh utility. In the Terminal, ssh allows you to connect to and operate other computers. With JellyfiSSH you don’t need to memorize all the command line options; you can choose them within JellyfiSSH and then launch a Terminal session. With JellyfiSSH you can also create ssh tunnels. A couple of uses of ssh tunnels are to relay mail through your server even if your hotel network blocks outgoing mail and to control another computer with VNC over a secure, encrypted channel.

LockTight is a Preference Pane that lets you lock your screen with a single keystroke. More accurately, it lets you enable the screensaver with a single keystroke, then if you have your Security preferences set to “Require password to wake this computer from sleep or screen saver” your computer will be safe. This is an alternative to using a mouse corner to activate the screen saver. This is based on a similar program called SleepTight, but LockTight should work on Intel Macs as well.

You set the master password for the database and it’s encrypted with AES or Twofish using a 256 bit key.

Lithium

Lithium is a very powerful app for monitoring servers and just about everything else. This app won’t be for everyone, but for those of you who need something like this you’ll LOVE it.

I saw this application in a demonstration at Macworld. I was so impressed with it and I was really happy to see that they offer a “lite” version that only limits the number of devices you can monitor. But if you have a small network in your house or you’ve used our tutorials to set up a Mac mini as a server then this will work just fine. It does take a bit of a set up, but they offer videos for setting it up on Mac OS X.

From the developer’s site:

LITHIUM Network Monitoring Platform is an integrated and feature rich network, server and appliance monitoring and management platform. Designed to provide an end-to-end solution, Lithium includes automated device monitoring, out-of-the-box support for SNMP and an integrated trouble-ticket case management system.
The platform is built around a scalable, modular architecture that incorporates a Unix-based server-side component (Core) to perform automated device monitoring, data collection, analysis and storage and to manage the multi-user case management system. Core is available for Mac OS X (Client/Server) and Linux (Debian, Fedora, RHEL and CentOS).

Windows and Mac OS X clients (Console) provide the user with a graphically rich and interactive monitoring and management console that delivers integration and efficient work-flow beyond the capabilities of web-based applications alone. A web-based interface (Web) delivers an anywhere, anytime, portal to view all network monitoring data without the need for client applications from any web-enabled device.

HamachiX

If you're new to Freemacware.com and like what you see, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed or signup for our emails at the right. We'll send you one Mac freeware application every day. Thanks for visiting!

icon

HamachiX is the frontend for Mac OS X to hamachi, a secure mediated VPN client. (VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and it allows you to see local services from afar including shared drives, printers, and Bonjour chatting.

Mac OS X has some VPN capabilites built in, but nothing like HamachiX can offer. My boss and I played with it for a while yesterday and were amazed. It has an amazing ability to make its way thru firewalls and doesn’t need port forwarding. This means that you can set it up on your parent’s computer and take it over with ease and security.

In order for it to work, you create a network with the hamachi service. The free service is very capable, but there is also a premium service that is priced quite fair.

There is a bit of a learning curve on this app. I’ve created a tutorial on “How To set up a VPN with HamachiX.”

iQuip will let you easily add notes or quotes to your login window. It’s mostly written to give you a little quote or fortune, but I use it for something more important to me.

A few weeks ago, I wrote an article called “How To Prepare For A Stolen Mac.” One of the suggestions I offered was to put a note in your login window that reads something like:

“This computer belongs to Brian Stucki. If you have found or purchased this machine, please contact Brian at 702-555-2332 or brian@email.com. A reward is offered for it’s safe return.”

It’s probably a good idea not to put a physical address because if your computer is stolen at a coffee shop or library, you wouldn’t want to make it to easy for the theif to be pointed toward your home.

Yes, I know this can be overwritten with a OS re-install, but if your computer ever gets stolen, you’re really going to hope wish that you did everything you could to get it back.
