In Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Apple has introduced Time Machine, a very convenient way to make backups.Unfortunately the backup interval is preset constantly to one hour. Apple uses an launchd daemon to control the timing, but changing the interval value in the launchd.plist file has no effect. TimeMachineScheduler disables the automatic backup function of Time Machine and installs its own launchd agent. As the agent is located in the main library, the administrator password is required for all (writing) operations.

Googalyzer is a pretty cool power tool kind of application for serious Google power users. It’s billed as a research tool, and some have criticised it for being essentially just a browser - which it is. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t handy or helpful for folks researching in Google.

The primary virtue of the Googalyzer browser/tool is the ease with which you can query different segments of Google without having to leave the application or open any more tabs. You have a bar across the top of the browser - similar in look and feel to OS X’s dock. Based on Unix utilities psync and cron, PsyncX is a utility for doing automated backups. You simply choose what you want to back up, where to backup to, and then a time for the backup. PsyncX sets a cron job to run the backup at that time. If you have an external hard disk connected to your computer, or your iPod with disk mode enabled, this is a great way to backup regularly.

Newer Macs come with an option not only to sleep but to deep sleep. Your Mac draws a very small amount of power while sleeping to save the contents of its memory. When deep sleeping, the memory is saved to the hard disk and then the computer draws no power at all.

Apple doesn’t provide a “deep sleep” option so you’ll need an application like this one to try it. It’s aptly named.
