“VNC” is a protocol that lets you connect to and control other computers. It’s typically used for system administration or remote troubleshooting, and has the advantage of working on Mac, Windows, and Linux. I have used it to connect to and fix my parents’ computer.
Chicken of the VNC is a lightweight, open source VNC client for the Mac.
