Clam AntiVirus is an open source anti-virus software package that has been around for a while. Many Linux servers use Clam AV for protection from viruses.
Just recently, Mac user Mark Allan created a GUI version of Clam AV called ClamXav. ClamXav combines proven virus protection from Clam AV with the beautiful interface we Mac users expect.
While there have been no viruses on the Mac platform to date, ClamXav is a great idea for users running VirtualPC, or for the kind-hearted users who want to help protect their Windows-using friends, or for the paranoid. I haven’t tried it, but kudos to Mark Allan for making this available to the Mac community. The threat of Mac viruses is so low that I don’t think it makes sense to pay for anti-virus software — ClamXav fits the bill perfectly.
