If you have a Gmail account, you can download your messages directly into Apple Mail. But if you don’t use Apple Mail, Gmail Notifier may be for you. Gmail Notifier, developed by Google itself, simply puts a small icon on your toolbar that lets you know when you have new messages. The number of unread messages appears in the toolbar. You can also choose what sound you want to hear when new messages arrive. Click the Notifier to go directly to the message in your browser.
Gmail Notifier also lets you fetch mail for only a single Gmail category, can send Growl notifications, and allows for plugins, as mentioned in a recent Google Blog post.
