Apple Mail lets you create powerful rules — you can automatically highlight incoming messages with colors, forward them to someone else, or organize them into folders. Rules usually depend on criteria, such as “if this message is from grandma, highlight it yellow.” You can reapply rules after a message has already arrived by highlighting the message and hitting Apple-Option-L (or click Apply Rules from the Message menu.)

Mail Act-On is a highly useful Mail plugin built on the clever idea of applying a single rule to a message, as opposed to applying all of the rules. For instance, you might setup a rule that colors every message red, then use Mail Act-On to associate the rule with the keystroke “`r”. When you push “`r” the message under the cursor will be highlighted red. Mail Act-On rules don’t get executed when new mail comes in, so they are only run when you push the associated keystroke.

I used Mail Act-On to set up a hotkey for moving messages to my Archive folder. After I read a message, I simply hit the hotkey and the message is moved to Archive. No more dragging messages with the mouse. I was so glad to find Mail Act-On!
