The iMac G5 and the iBook don’t come with the ability to plugin in a separate display to expand your Desktop. If you plug in an external monitor, it will mirror whatever you see on the main screen. That might be useful for connecting to a projector to give a presentation, but it won’t let you use all the real estate of having a second display. Screen Spanning Doctor fixes this by modifying your iBook or iMac G5 firmware to behave like the Pro line of Apple products or the Intel line of iMacs. (You should not use this — nor should you need this — on anything except an iMac G5 or an iBook. Be sure to check the compatibility list before installing.)
There is some talk online that this might void your warranty because it modifies your video firmware, so use at your own discretion, but it is reversible. I used it on my iMac G5 and found it extremely valuable to be able to connect a second monitor and extend my work area.
