Shades
If you're new to Freemacware.com and like what you see, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed or signup for our emails at the right. We'll send you one Mac freeware application every day. Thanks for visiting!
Apple laptops come with convenient buttons to dim and brighten your screen. The desktop Macs do not. That is where Shades comes in. Shades gives you an easy way to dim your screen. Just start up the app and you have a little slider to move up and down. It’s much faster than going thru the System Preferences.
I love this app because I’m an early riser. I’m usually up a couple hours before the sun so when I make my way to the office, it is still quite dark in my house. When I start up the iMac screen it’s like the blazes of the sun shot a burst right into my eye. But, not anymore thanks to Shades. I just start up the app and slide it down to a tolerable brightness.
This is also great if your Mac is in your bedroom and your better half is trying to sleep.
Update: We have a ton of helpful readers pointing me to F14 and F15 to do this from the keyboard. I should have mentioned that I have those keys assigned to do other tasks though I’m sure there are plenty of readers who appreciate the tip.
