With the motto “The whole world can talk for free,” Skype brings internet telephony to the masses. Perhaps you already use iChat (free with every Mac computer) to hold audio chats with other Mac users. Skype builds on this by letting you chat for free with any Skype user, whether on Mac, Windows, or Linux. You can plug in headphones and use your Powerbook’s built-in microphone, for instance, or plug in a separate microphone or headset.
While several services allow you to hold audio chats (iChat, Google Talk, MSN Messenger, etc.), Skype also allows you to make inexpensive calls to regular landline and mobile phones. For about $.02 you can call anywhere in the U.S. Their international rates are excellent too. I’ve used Skype to call Brazil for about $.04 a minute.
Skype is a great way to communicate!
