Stellarium is incredible freeware that “renders realistic skies in real time with openGL.” So basically, after you set your location, the program will show you exactly what you would see if you walked out your front door and looked up at the sky with binoculars or a telescope. It will help you to locate the different planets and constellations. This software is commonly used in planetariums.
A reader suggested this freeware a few days ago and I’ve really had a fun time with it. Here in Las Vegas you don’t see a lot of stars because of the bright city. But this program has helped me identify the bright ones that can compete with the light from the strip.
Before you go on your next camping trip or bonfire, take a minute to fire this program up. (Pun intended) Learn a little about what you’ll be seeing that night to later impress your kids and/or friends. (Just imagine the attention you’ll get from the ladies. At least you’ll have some way to compete with the guitar player in the group.)
